Maybe you’re a little depressed now that summer is over - that’s normal. The cold months can bring everybody down, if only just a little bit, since they take away sunlight, and with it, a lot of color, and activity from the world. But that’s not to say, however, that winter doesn’t have its own unique beauty, or that it can’t be made more beautiful by those who really want to.
In this article, we’ll talk about how you can make your winter garden more appealing by using hanging baskets to vamp up the exterior of your home.
First of all, what are hanging baskets?
As the name suggests, a hanging basket is pretty much a floating plant pot. These baskets are typically hung from wall fixtures, and allow you to decorate your walls with beautiful, sometimes even exotic plants and flowers. They make for exciting decoration, and are just what you need to bring a little more life to this coming winter.
The reason? Well, since winter means very reduced opportunities for planting and gardening, hanging baskets provide a viable alternative that allows you to get creative with your soil, and also your choice of plant. They’re also easier to care for, and, in extreme cases, bring indoors in case of extreme weather. But hopefully, it won’t come to that.
How do you pick your hanging basket?
Obviously, in picking your hanging basket, you’ll need to take into account a number of details, such as:
- Frame material - you can get hanging baskets made of metal, plastic, and wicker, as these are highly popular materials. The material you choose should depend on the style of your home;
- Care Time - this will help you decide whether the basket should be open or closed. Open baskets are a good choice if you can spare the time to care for your hanging plant each day. If not, a closed basket may be a better option, and this might also help you narrow down your choice of frame;
- Appropriate Plants - obviously, not every flower and plant will thrive during the winter season, so try to plant something with high chances of survival, life pansies, violas, primroses, thymes, and so on. You might also want to alternate with hanging plants, as these create a wonderful impression in exterior home decor.
- Space available - lastly, the basket(s) you choose will depend on how much space you have, so that you can coordonate your existing baskets.
Don’t put all your flowers in one basket!
If you haven’t got much space, be pickier about your choice of plants, but don’t try to cram them all in one single basket, as this can compromise the growth of either plant!
